THEY WILL ASK thee as to what they should spend on others. Say: "Whatever of your wealth you spend shall [first] be for your parents, and for the near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer; and whatever good you do, verily, God has full knowledge thereof." - Al-Baqarah (2:215)

Now what shall I do with this thing?

My sister and I were doing some spring cleaning over the weekend and we found lots of "disimpan tak guna dibuang sayang" kinda things. But we had a good laugh when my sister found this...

Meet my first ever hand phone!!

If you're not sure of the size of that phone, take a look at the following comparison...

On the left-most is one of the present-day simpler and cheaper models available; and the one in the middle is the hand phone/pocket PC I am currently using.

Oh, let's not forget to compare them sideways:

Now, imagine putting my old hand phone inside your pocket!!

Hey, don't laugh la! When I bought that phone, that model was considered canggih already (there weren't that many models to choose from anyway as compared to now). At that time only 010 and 018 numbers were available other than 011 for those bigger and bulkier mobile phones. No SIM cards. No SMS. Definitely no cameras. Just making and receiving calls.

Yeah, just calls. (and the phone had to be that big, huh?) Yet, it was more expensive than my current hand phone.

I suppose my first hand phone is another of those "disimpan tak guna dibuang sayang" collection of mine. Not that it's totally useless. I can still use it as a weapon. Hey, if it hits someone's head, can pengsan I tell you!!

So, what shall I do with it?

Pi, I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw that old h/p of yours. Believe it or not, my first h/p, bought in the early 1990s when I first started my PR consultancy, was even bulkier. berat lak tu. the base was squarish, can letak upright on the table sah tak tumbang punya.

those early days of h/p, when one unit cost in the region of RM5k, sapa yg ada bergaya sakan. whenever pi mamak, plonked it in the middle of the table, macam centrepiece.

We have come a long way, babe!

pi bani, here we can recycle them and the proceeds got o charity. I remember my first chunky one as well. Agaknya kalau balik kat kepala any muggers mungkin pengsan. Now i have one with a very canggih camera. But I dont know how to use half of its functions without the children's help.

I think I know which model of h/p you're talking about. I had a colleague then who used it - dengan bangganya he'd tayang the phone wherever he went!! I bet now kalau ada anyone terpaksa pakai such a bulky phone, bukannya tayang, kalau boleh nak disorok lagi. But then again... how to hide something THAT bulky kan? Dalam handbag pun tak muat, kan pulak dalam poket! :)

Wa'alaikum salam! Eh, if someone gave you a hand phone that big (free of course), would you actually use it... especially in campus? ;)

Kak Teh:
Maybe I can send the h/p to the spot where they collect old h/p batteries. Or maybe I can just keep it in my car... who knows it may come in handy one day - baling kat kepala penyangak mana-mana... hehehe...

Oh, zaman tu memang rasa cool pakai phone sebesar tu. Janji namanya mobile phone! Tapi manalah tau kan, satu hari nanti phone besar back in fashion... tapi siapa yang berhajat nak masukkan dalam poket, kena buat poket besar-besar lah... :)

simpan je lah....

if you laugh a little now, imagine how much bigger you'd laugh 20, 30 years from now when ur cell phone (or whatever telecommunications device there is at that time)is even smaller than ur current cell phone.

And that one isn't even the bulkiest of the lot. Remember that big huge ATUR that cost like RM10K and looked & weighed like a briefcase filled with bricks?

Pi Bani said...

Sue,
Yeah, mine wasn't even the bulkiest of the lot. By the time I bought my first mobile phone, harga pun dah turun sikit... dapatlah around RM1K - which was considered cheap for a handphone then. And masa tu pun mana ada choice of "ori" and "local".

Simpan that old phone memang boleh... problem is orang macam I ni, bila simpan barang especially yang tak pakai or yang jarang pakai, bila nak cari balik dah tak tau kat mana - hilang bersimpan!!!

OK lah, maybe I'll just put it on my messy table at home as decoration... kalau ada salesman datang ke rumah tak reti nak balik walaupun kita tak layan dia, baling je phone tu kat dia! ;)

salam pi bani,
teruja nak tgk blog u ni,bukak2 pasal handphone.

Ezza:
Welcome to my blog. Tak kisahlah kalau nak melalut pun... dah postingnya melalut, adatlah dapat comment melalut juga kan? Salam perkenalan to you too.
