THEY WILL ASK thee as to what they should spend on others. Say: "Whatever of your wealth you spend shall [first] be for your parents, and for the near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer; and whatever good you do, verily, God has full knowledge thereof." - Al-Baqarah (2:215)

Yah... Yah...

I haven’t even started my daily morning kampong exercise routine when Yah called me up this morning. She said her hospital appointment was today and she wanted to meet up with me. I told her to call me once she’s done with her appointment and then wait at the usual place.

So at 1 pm this afternoon I went straight to the hospital to fetch her. She needs to go for her viral load test soon and since the test is to be done at a private hospital that she’s never heard of, she was hoping I could show her the way. Not a problem at all…

Right after showing her the place, we went straight for lunch. I managed to get some updates from her during lunch.

Remember in my earlier posting I mentioned that Yah had to fork out some money to repair her house which was damaged during a rainstorm? Well, the repairs were carried out because the landlord had earlier agreed that Yah’s family can stay there for as long as they promised to take care of the landlord’s orchard in the kampong without paying anything additional. So Yah proceeded with the repairs and paid out RM4,000 taken from her EPF withdrawal. The balance of the repairs was sponsored by the YB from whom Yah had sought help from earlier.

The repairs were completed right before Raya.

After Raya, the landlord came with his business-minded son telling Yah that if she wants to continue staying there, the rental will have to be increased. I bet the son had something to do with the change in the landlord’s decision. Yah asked if the landlord is willing to compensate her for the repairs she had done to the house if she moves out. The landlord simply told her that since the house was not his, he won’t pay a single sen. So Yah went to the same YB telling him of her problem. The YB agreed to help her apply for a PPRT house. Hopefully her application will be approved so nobody can chase the family out of their house again.

And I told Yah to make sure she tears down the house if she gets a PPRT house. I’m sure she can sell the wood, roof, etc for at least a minimal price. More importantly, so that the landlord will not get the house which he never built in the first place and then rent it out to somebody else! (Yeah, at times like this, I can become a batu api)

I was also informed by Yah that of late her kampong folks dare not come near her. Somehow they found out about her HIV through a nurse at the nearby Klinik Kesihatan. Even those who came to the house to visit Yah’s mother, would not dare drink anything prepared at her house. Sigh…

Anyway, Yah also told me over lunch about an incident that happened at the hospital earlier today. “Ada sorang lelaki tu ajak saya kawin kak,” Yah said. I almost choked. You see, while waiting for her supply of medication, one guy whom she saw at the HIV clinic (also a PLWHA) decided to open his mouth to have a chat with her. He told her how his wife left him after she found out he was positive. After finding out that Yah was a single mom, he asked Yah if she’d marry him. JUST LIKE THAT AND HE ASKED HER TO MARRY HIM???? He must be nuts!

He told Yah if they marry, when he dies, his pension will go to Yah. He even told Yah not to worry as he had never been involved in drugs. He got HIV because “dulu saya main perempuan” so he said.

NOT TO WORRY? More reason to worry I would say! I wonder if the wife left him because of his HIV or because she just found out about his promiscuous activities. As a matter of fact I think the reason he proposed to Yah without even knowing Yah’s full name is because he can’t live without a woman! He thought proposing to a fellow HIV positive person was the answer to his needs and desires!

Before she left, this guy gave her his phone number and asked for hers. And guess what? Yah actually gave hers!

Me: “Yah nak ke kawin dengan dia?”
Yah: “Ish! Tak nak saya kak. Cari beban buat apa?!”
Me: “Habis tu yang gi layan dia buat apa? Janganlah bagi nombor talipon! Entah apa jenis manusia pun kita tak tau lagi. Senang-senang aje sekali jumpa dah ajak orang kawin.”
Yah: “Dah dia mintak nombor talipon saya nak buat macam mana kak? Takkan saya nak tipu kata tak ada.”

Aduuuuh…. Why lah this woman so lurus bendul one?! Yah… Yah… she may be one tough lady but she sure doesn’t know how to wiggle her way out of this kind of situation…

Dear Pi,
Kesian Yah, jangan la marah dia sangat (I tau la u dulu head-girl), I'm sure she was just thrilled that someone was interested in her - natural reaction!Lain kali marah sikit je...Keep up the great work.

Neme,
Mana ada I marah dia pun... cuma I tegur je. Dalam pada dia terkejut tiba-tiba orang yang dia tak kenal ajak dia kawin, dia boleh bagi juga nombor phone dia. Nanti kalau dibuatnya this guy jenis yang keeps on calling, kat I juga si Yah asyik ngadu hal. Tu yang I tak tahan tu... cukup-cukuplah dengan masalah HIV nya... tak payahlah tambah masalah lain.

I'm the tukang kebun at home. Daily exercise varies... mesin rumput, meracun lalang, menebas semak samun, menyangkul, cantas dahan pokok, menebang pokok pisang, etc etc etc...

As for the man who proposed to Yah, I've checked his background... this one is quite a desperado... desperados are willing to do anything!

Nightwing,
This nurse I don't know lah, but the mulut murai nurse in Fuzi's case got a "lecture" from the doctor and as a result of that, the nurse lagi sakit hati with Fuzi and ended up spreading even worse stories about her...

Kak Pi,

Kesian Yah. How naive she is. Sad to say that people always take advantage of people yang lurus bendul macam Yah ni.

Anyway, how could the nurse tell other people about something so confidential? Teruk betul.

Helo Kak Pi,

Wah!! like that also can Fuzi's case..I guess this nurse never heard of balasan or karma.

The more one bad mouth people...the more will kena.

Spread negative...will receive negative.

Spread positive ...will receive positive...:)

It is somewhat regretable that some nurses (or should i say most) do not put patient confidentiality as a primary priority. Talking about being ethical here. I wonder where did all the 'practice standards' went? or there is never any. Perhaps something should be done to train our nurses better. Professionalism. There are still a lot to improve in malaysia.

Hi Pi,

There is not much confidentiality in Malaysia. People generally are not professional (not all, I shall qualify before anyone throw eggs at me!) Entah lah Pi, memang takde integrity most people.

I have met people like the landlord and his son. People dah jatuh dalam parit they take a bat and hit him/her lagi. Heartless!

As for Yah being a betul bendul, memang. She meant what she said. Memang dia tak tau the sophistication of getting out of any sticky situation. Poor girl.

The other guy proposing to Yah...hmm...ain't that simple eh? Macam2 adaaaa...

Nana,
Nurses are also humans. Although that's not an excuse for them to spread the news about a patient's illness, the point is, in any profession, there are bound to be unethical people. There are good ones and there are bad ones.

Most of my PLWHA clients memang takut kalau-kalau terjumpa any hospital staff yang diorang kenal... takut jadi macam ni lah... habis satu kampung tau!

Nightwing,
Yeah, the more you give of anything, the more you will get back, good or bad...

Pi Bani said...

Anonymous,
I'm quite sure there are some guidelines as to the do's and don'ts. But some people just aren't professional at all. Worse, if the patient is somebody they personally know... gone case!!

Pi Bani said...

K.Ruby,
People can't seem to keep secrets, can they? All it takes is just by telling one person. A tells a trusted friend, B with a word of caution - "You don't tell anybody else, ya!" B then tells his/her trusted friend C the same thing. And it goes on and on and on... until everybody knows.

Worse, along the line, ada pulaklah yang tokok tambah asam, garam and MSG. Tengah bercerita tu ada pulak yang bertanya, "Macam mana dia boleh dapat AIDS?" "Ish, apa lagi, buat kerja tak senonohlah." Padahal kawan tu sebenarnya mangsa aje...

them father-son team of bloodsuckers ought to be kicked in the teeth!

come to think of it, a unit of PPRT house isnt that bad for a decent place to be called HOME. with a decent home, life would be more organised. and the MP shld be able to get yah a unit. hey, afterall GE is around the corner what...

kak Pi, since my knowledge abt PLWHAs is as good as zero, i'm curious to know abt a few things la..

malu but here's one anyway. ehem.. can a couple, who are both positive, be doing it?

landowner tu sounds like he doesn need the extra 'rent' money fr yah tapi anaknya yg memang jenis kudukut yg suka ambik kesempatan! kureng sungguh. yg mamt ajak yah kahwin tu mesti tak reti jaga diri sendiri sbb tu ex-wife dia left him. boleh ke just ajak a stranger kahwin. poning kepala eden dengar perangai orang camni.

Pi Bani said...

Kerp,
Can a couple who are both positive be doing it? Be doing what?! (tengah buat muka innocent ni)

Hehehe... actually walaupun sama-sama positive they are advised to still practice safe sex - pakai condom!! They may both be positive but one person may be in worser condition then the other and may worsen the condition of the partner if they don't practice safe sex.

Dear Pi,
I just know about your blog from Nurin Jazlin blog. After going through the entry I will like to share with you about a girl who think she have HIV. She is 24, pretty and sweet a graduate working with an engineering company. I did not know her but the operator get my number for her because I am an infection control nurse. She told me she have sex with a men 3 time and later find out that he is HIV positive. The men is not even her boyfriend. I ask her did the man rape you. She did not answer me. Anyway I managed to get her to see Infectious Diease Doctor for counselling and screening. Reading from all you stories I feel sad and sorry for her even though I have seen many HIV patients in my working life.......

Anonymous 1.54pm,
Thanks for sharing the story. Her story is a bit like Zana's whose story I had posted much earlier. Hard to say about this girl you're talking about, but in Zana's case, she had trouble at home and was actually looking for love outside and ended up in even more trouble. I bet it's not much difference for this girl, although without knowing her family background, I shouldn't be assuming anything.

I hope this girl, if confirmed infected, will have someone to talk to. Otherwise she may go bonkers.

dia lonely kot Yah ni....and that landlord tu macam leeches pulak....

agreed with some here as many of our professionals are not professionals when doing their work...confidentialities tu kan memang ethic in most services be it health, finance or what ever...

Zai,
Landlord dia ni memang sekejap cakap lain sekejap cakap lain. Susah dibuatnya. Hopefully Yah will get the PPRT house soon.

As for the issue of confidentiality, memanglah people should be professional enough to keep to their job ethics. But mulut orang ni payah sikit nak control lah...

David,
I assume you're talking about Flavia's case. Poor girl, I hope the mother will not give up fighting for her case.
